Entropy Chapter 2, Invasion: Beta update

UPDATE 9/20 – Public Entropy server online.  Get the Entropy Invasion mod pack here on Technic!

Please help me test the new version of Entropy before I replace the existing Entropy with Chapter 2: INVASION.  If you do or don’t find bugs, but have suggestions or comments; please post a comment to me on Twitter (@glixyl), Discuss on Technic, my YouTube channel or on this blog.

Update 9/8/2014-Thanks to @72206 for reporting a monster spawner bug on Technic Discuss. It has been fixed.

To the end, I have released a new version of the Entropy BETA and a server as well.

Changelog v003:  Replaced all Liteloader mods with Forge equivalents.  Added some iChun mods such as ‘It fell from the sky’.  Fixed a sound bug that was crashing the client during storms.

ENTROPY: INVASION is a survival space horror mod pack with disaster and extreme survival aspects.  It is scary, challenging, beautiful and rewarding.  There are cyclones, tornadoes, land-slides, cave-ins, tree snags, thirst, aliens and predators, meteor strikes, Pigzillas and more!

Explore the Moon and Mars with your Tier 1 and Tier 2 spaceships.  Use Mekanism technologies to make realistic jetpacks, robot followers, ore processors, universal power conversion, balloons and other technical content.  Build a logistics and storage network with remote panels.  Harness and wield water, fire and redstone particles with your particle glove; unleashing streams of fire and redstone at your enemies, or use water particles to either shield yourself or levitate.  Make a hang glider!

Help the Marines and engage in firefights against the aliens, predators and other hostiles.  Feed a bat pumpkin pie to gain a follower that will gain experience and abilities from battle, as well as temporary night vision while held.

After zooming in with binoculars or a scope, use one of hundreds of guns, explosives, rocket launchers and other weapons against aliens and foes.  Make and drive a tank or jeep.  Fly a plane.  Pilot a titan!  Craft and wear Predator armor with a custom HUD.  Craft and wear Xenomorph armor that allows you to climb walls.

Visit the End for a expanded experience including new ores, dungeons and monsters.  Construct and operate realistic computers from the component level up.  Explore new villages and ruins that may have some surprises for you.

Dynamic light maps and shader-like effects (without the use of shaders), make Entropy: Invasion both beautiful and perform well, even on slower gaming computers.  SoundFilters add reverb in caves and materials block out sounds; making mining and exploration more realistic and immersive.

p.s.- check out dimension LV223 (-7) by using a LV223 portal, where I have been starting to add some custom world generation.  I have big plans for Entropy, so stay tuned for further news.

ENTROPY: INVASION on Technic – BETA client version

Happy Labor Day for those of you who are celebrating it today.

As a salute to Labor Day, I decided to release a BETA version of the ENTROPY: INVASION client to the Technic platform.

My son and I have tested the mod pack and it works on our MacOS computers as well as Windows well.  If you want to try it out, go to it’s Technic page under an alternative account I made.  This version will replace the current version of Entropy on Technic after it is stable and a few more mods are updated to Minecraft 1.7.10.  A server will be released soon with the next version.  A few mods will also be added to the next version most certainly, so treat this as BETA software please as IDs may change as well as mod functionality.  Please post bugs to the Entropy: Invasion discussion page located on the Technic mod pack tab.

NOTE: Minecraft 1.7.10 is notoriously difficult to work with, but I decided to give it a go.  I cannot add most mods that you may wish to add because of compatibility issues with many 1.7.10 mods.  If you do have an idea though, please don’t hesitate to make a suggestion.

ENTROPY: INVASION

I was reading the discussions section on the Entropy Technic page and came across a lot of feedback from people wanting bug fixes, an update and a public server for Entropy.

Although Dev_ill and I have been working on a new version of Glixyl’s Revenge based on Minecraft 1.7.X+, we have gotten stuck waiting for some mods to update to 1.7.10.  We decided that an update for Entropy wouldn’t be too hard now on MC1.6.4, so we decided to work on a new Entropy that is already turning out to be quite polished and stable on our test server; soon ready for final testing and production.

We call this new version ENTROPY: INVASION.  Here is some footage of testing in both single player and on our private server.  Dev_ill and I will do a little Let’s Play as well and will be looking for people to help us play test before releasing this new version in mid-September.  We are also contemplating running our own private server for Entropy, which will most likely be hard-coded into the launcher for go-live.

Beautiful, Deadly – New Release and Server!

Dev_ill and I just released the new version of Beautiful, Deadly last night.  Here is some gameplay footage highlighting some of the features including different shaders, mods and landscapes of this newly updated mod pack.

Think of Beautiful, Deadly as the magical equivalent of our Entropy mod pack.  I liked what we accomplished with Entropy and wanted to do something similar with a fantasy genre that wasn’t too focused on machines and science; but nature and magic.  The world in some ways is more hostile than it was in Entropy, especially dealing with nature.

The textures are default Minecraft 16x, but with Better Foliage mods that make the vegetation more realistic looking; especially if you use shaders.

A word of warning on performance.  My mod packs typically require a decent gaming machine to have a enjoyable experience that is lag free.  I focus on content and eye candy for players who are looking for a special Minecraft experience that is meant to impress the casual observer; perhaps getting them interested in playing Minecraft in the process.

SHADERS: Custom Lite and Ultra shaders for MacOS, Windows and Linux are available via the video settings->shaders from the options menu.  Hybrid shaders/animated textures with god rays, waving water/reflections and more.
There are a few different ways to use the new graphics and tune them to your system specifications.  All combinations will work on MacOS, Windows and Linux; if you have a fast enough graphics card to render them that is.  I have designed this mod pack to give the users a variety of graphics settings which cover a variety of computer types.  Shaders look best above ground or with the use of light sources such as torches).

**To play this mod pack, you should allocate at least 1.5GB of RAM to Technic Launcher, otherwise you won’t be able to load the nether in single player.  To do this open the Technic Launcher and click the gear icon on the upper right of the Technic Launcher screen.  Allocate 1.5GB of RAM within the Launcher Options screen.
*To use shaders you should allocate 2GB of RAM or more.  Read the shaders information at the bottom of the page for more information.

Oculus Rift DK2 and Minecrift with Forge Mods!

A few months ago I pre-ordered an Oculus Rift DK2 (development kit 2), which is the newest version of a virtual reality system that includes 1080p OLED @75Hz and head tracking.  It arrived a few days ago and I have been spending some time playing with some of the demos out there.  By far, the most fun I have had with the DK2 is playing and modding Minecraft to make Minecrift as awesome of an experience as possible.

Playing Minecraft on the Oculus Rift DK2 with its improved latency and graphics was very fun and felt like I was experiencing the game again for the first time.  For only 350 US dollars, the DK2 contains some very impressive hardware.

Although it isn’t official, there is a DK2 beta version of Minecrift for Minecraft 1.6.4 which supports forge mods.  The limitations of modding for the Oculus Rift is that any mod which uses EntityRenderer will not work.  You also need to run Minecrift in Rift extended mode.

TIP:  While calibrating the start screen in Minecrift, look up/down/left/right– before looking forward and hitting spacebar.

Here are some video samples from my Minecrift on Oculus Rift DK2 modding experience:

Beautiful, Deadly – New Graphics Demo

UPDATE 8/8/2014: Beautiful, Deadly version 019 released on it’s Technic page.

I will be releasing a new version of Beautiful, Deadly within the next few days that will feature many updates and the addition of various mods.  Localized weather per player has been added, with particle clouds, storms, typhoons and tornadoes.  Block physics are optimized and perform better.  Drawbridges and other mechanical features have been included with this release as well.

The performance and graphics quality are much improved as you will see in this video:

I will update this post within the next day or two when I it is released to the public.

Entropy, Revenge and Beautiful, Deadly Updates? Vote!

UPDATE 17MAY2014 – After leaving the voting open for a few weeks, we will begin work on a new Glixyl’s Revenge.  Thanks for those who have provided feedback for the mod list for Revenge so far, but please comment if you wish to have something special considered for inclusion into the new Revenge!

Yesterday I released the new version of Beautiful, Deadly on Technic at http://www.technicpack.net/modpack/details/devills-adventure.87338  It also contains many updates, water plants and other nice touches I think you will like.

It contains shaders, post-processing effects and over 100 animated textures on MacOS, Linux and Windows.  You need to have Java 7 installed and a legal copy of Minecraft to play it.

If you don’t have Technic, get it at http://www.technicpack.net/download and ‘Add a Pack’ from the launcher as I talk about here> Beautiful, Deadly Prototype

For those of you who are familiar with Dev_ill and my mod packs over the last few years, I have some questions about what you would like to see us work on next.

Entropy – I am thinking of updating this mod pack to Minecraft version 1.6.4 (from 1.5.2), but to do that the physics will change and operate more like they do in Beautiful, Deadly.  It will add sanity, sleep deprivation, air quality on Earth, thirst and the other aspects contained within Beautiful, Deadly; but have all the chaos/disaster/space horror aspects of Entropy instead of the magic and landscape of Beautiful, Deadly.  It represent a nice update to Flans Mod, Galacticraft (adding some more planets), changes to Universal Electricity, better Aliens vs Predator, etc.  Updating to 1.6.4 will most likely break existing 1.5.2 maps though.  Click to go to Entropy page on Technic> http://www.technicpack.net/modpack/details/entropy-by-glixyl.72573

Beautiful, Deadly – It would be possible to add more ‘low tech’ mods to Beautiful, Deadly to make it more like later versions of AdventureTech, but I need to be careful because I don’t want too many problems with the block physics.

Revenge – I was also thinking of a new twist on my Revenge mod pack series, but will simply call it Revenge most likely; it would have a lot of mods with some ‘special stuff’.  It would be a Minecraft 1.7.2+ pack most likely.  I could start working on that with 1.7.2 and improve as more mods are updated.  Revenge II client and server download is at> http://www.technicpack.net/modpack/details/glixyls-revenge-ii.77097

Beautiful, Deadly – Shaders/Textures/Physics/Sanity Release Out

Client and Server for Beautiful, Deadly version 017 is released to Technic.  Download>>  the client and server with custom shaders for MacOS, Windows and Linux here.

A shader and post processing release of Beautiful, Deadly is now released with over 100 animated textures. will be a minor feature update to physics and sanity as well.  There are a few different ways to use the new graphics and tune them to your system specifications.  All combinations work on MacOS, Windows and Linux; if you have a fast enough graphics card to render them that is.  I have designed this mod pack to give the users a variety of graphics settings which cover a variety of computer types.  (shaders look best above ground or with the use of light sources such as torches).

Option 1:  Old/Slow Computer or Laptop

Advanced OpenGL = on, ResourcePack = Default, Graphics = Fast

Option 2: Desktop or Laptop with a dedicated video card

Advanced OpenGL = on, ResourcePack = BlockHybrid, Graphics = Fancy (setting to fancy enables waving leaves and other cool textures without the need for shaders)

Option 3: Powerful Desktop or Laptop such as recent MacBook Pro or Republic of Gamers

Advanced OpenGL = off, ResourcePack = BlockHybrid, Shaders = ‘meeps’ or ‘meepsultra’ (I needed to modify the shader files to be compatible with the other mods I am using), Graphics = Fast or Fancy (fancy enables best lighting, waving objects, etc. but is very resource intensive.)  This setting is shown on my MacBook Pro in the screenshot below.

Dark Souls II – my kind of game

I don’t usually review games, but there is something special I wish to tell you about which has shaped my own mod packs and has fed my hunger for extreme difficulty.

A few years ago I was home sick with the flu, feeling miserable.  Then all of a sudden this advertisement came on TV about a new game called ‘Demon’s Souls‘.  This game was supposedly one of the most difficult games ever made and had the endorsement of many publications.  I immediately got dressed and went to the local video game shop to pick it up.

Upon arriving at home I installed the game on my PS3.  Over the next few hours I got killed so many times that I was laughing at how brutal this Demon’s Souls game was.  I spent many hours over the next month or so playing it and loved every minute of it.  Simply hacking and slashing at every monster wasn’t possible in Demon’s Souls..  Instead you needed to take great care and have patience fighting almost every enemy, parrying, blocking and dodging attacks; sometimes running away was the only solution.

When the successor to Demon’s Souls (called Dark Souls) came out I was too busy with work and family to pick it up.  However, I picked up a copy for my little brother as well as a strategy book; to help him get through it.  Because of the time I spent playing Demon’s Souls my brother always asks me questions about Dark Souls, but I never seemed to know the answer.  This time around with Dark Souls II, I decided that I would play along with my him so that I could help him with it and compare experiences.

The metal finished case is textured and feels menacing to the touch.

The metal finished case is textured and feels menacing to the touch.

Because my brother lives far off of the power grid with limited access to internet (dial-up), I decided to pick up the Collector’s Edition Dark Souls 2 book for a gift to him again this time.  This book is high quality with amazing artwork, maps, tips and an attention to detail.

Dark Souls II - Collector's Edition book has excellent artwork and detail.

Dark Souls II – Collector’s Edition book has excellent artwork and detail.

Dark Souls II is a wide open game that is even more punishing than the previous two. Each time you die you lose some of your maximum health. Key items like the healing Estus Flask from Dark Souls I are crippled.  Just like its predecessors, your game can be invaded by evil players bent on ruining your day.  Made by Namco Bandai, Dark Souls II is available on XBOX 360, PS3 and coming soon on PC.  The Dark Souls II official site.

One thing to keep in mind is that Nvidia 3D Vision was supported by Helix mods on Dark Souls for PC, which was very cool in addition to the other mods you can install such as HD (1080p and larger) support.  Hopefully Helix will create a custom driver for this new title on PC as well.  If you have 3D Vision on PC and don’t know what Helix is, get over to the site and check it out now as there are so many titles which actually support 3D.  If not 3D vision, maybe an Oculus Rift driver for the new prototype?
