Oculus Rift DK2 and Minecrift with Forge Mods!
A few months ago I pre-ordered an Oculus Rift DK2 (development kit 2), which is the newest version of a virtual reality system that includes 1080p OLED @75Hz and head tracking. It arrived a few days ago and I have been spending some time playing with some of the demos out there. By far, the most fun I have had with the DK2 is playing and modding Minecraft to make Minecrift as awesome of an experience as possible.
Playing Minecraft on the Oculus Rift DK2 with its improved latency and graphics was very fun and felt like I was experiencing the game again for the first time. For only 350 US dollars, the DK2 contains some very impressive hardware.
Although it isn’t official, there is a DK2 beta version of Minecrift for Minecraft 1.6.4 which supports forge mods. The limitations of modding for the Oculus Rift is that any mod which uses EntityRenderer will not work. You also need to run Minecrift in Rift extended mode.
TIP: While calibrating the start screen in Minecrift, look up/down/left/right– before looking forward and hitting spacebar.
Here are some video samples from my Minecrift on Oculus Rift DK2 modding experience:
